The Decemberists stopped by KCRW’s increasingly popular Morning Becomes Eclectic (Iron & Wine and Cold War Kidswere just in last week) to play favorites from their Billboard toppingThe King Is Dead, and to play a cover of R.E.M.‘s classic ’86 tune from Lifes Rich Pageant.
Their rendition of “Cuyahoga” pays tribute to the influential band, Colin Meloy’s vocals resonating as mellow and optimistic as Michael Stipe’s. It resembles it pretty much to the tee, but the Decemberists make it their own with added accordion melodies and a gentler bass line than R.E.M.’s protruding use on the original. Download below:
