New Music Videos: Sia & Robyn

What a nice way to start a day, being treated to 2 new music videos from 2 artists I care for. One I've been waiting for, and one is a new version made for a regional release.

It's a shame Sia's new album 'Some People Have Real Problems' won't be in stores until next year, as it could easily make it to the top ten of my personal 2007 best albums list. It's a persistenly solid record from start to finish, one I have found myself coming back to again and again, which is a rare thing these days. 'Day Too Soon', the lead single, is now available on iTunes US & UK, and the video is just as heartfelt and lovely as the song itself. In it, we see Sia fluttering about in a park on a sunny day, watching lovebirds, smiling with her own unseen beau, and finally, warbling at the top of her lung on a giant swan boat as it floats on a beautiful lake. There are some Sia-esque quirky get-ups too. Although 'Breathe Me' is quite impossible to top, 'Day Too Soon' is a big, sincere, 'I-found-the-one!!!' love song in its own right. You can watch the video below, and grab a dancey Lifelike remix on your way out.

Video taken down by request. You can view it at Sia's official site for now. And it's gone. :-(

And now, the Swedish blogger's darling Robyn. 'Be Mine' will be her next UK single, to be released early next year, and like 'Handle Me', a new video has been made for 'different markets'. Sadly, this time, although I like the wintery feel of this version, the original is much better in terms of uniqueness. This is just a more watered-down, ordinary video of hers (I can understand the decision, as some might think that she's channeling Britney if they re-release the old one). Nice hair, though, as always.

Musically, it doesn't get me as much as the previous singles, but judging by the success of 'With Every Heartbeat', maybe people over there prefer heartbroken Robyn to cheeky Robyn? Should guarantee at least a top 20 spot, me thinks. I still prefer this ballad version:

Amy Winehouse: Live Covers & An Acoustic Version

You know what, I think it won't be exaggerative to say that Amy Winehouse can sing the phone book and still make it sound soulful. When you put aside all that eating-disordered, drunken ho persona aside (and her horseface), you realize how excellent she is at singing songs that sound like they were written in the '50s.
And when stripped down to just an acoustic guitar as company, it just becomes clearer how powerful that voice can be. Her gin-soaked voice just kinda pours down into your ears and wraps you around.

Here I give you a gorgeous cover of The Teddy Bears' 'To Know Him Is To Love Him', a Live Lounge cover of The Zutons' 'Valerie' and an acoustic version of 'Love Is A Losing Game', which is the bonus track for 'Back To Black'. Experience it yourself. She's a real gem.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Acoustic Live Performances On AOL Music - The Interface

Recently, I've been digging live acoustic performances, so last week when I had a chance to listen to the Yeah Yeah Yeahs doing the AOL Interface podcast, it was such a delight to hear Karen O getting stripped down with her usual rocking sounds and just sat down chirping pretty. They were really lazy, like, only performing 3 songs then the rest is interviewing, but the whole sessions was stellar. I never really got into 'Cheated Hearts' before, but this acoustic version was so amazing it made me fall in love with the song instantly. There's also 'Turn Into', one of their best songs to date, and a cover of The Rentals,'The Love I'm Searching For'. I post them all here for your listening pleasure, along with a bonus acoustic version of 'Maps'. Enjoy!

The Cardigans - KCRW Acoustic Sessions 2004

It was Stereogum's post on their his experience seeing The Cardigans live that inspired me to browse my music archives and upload this treasure trove for you.
Back in 2004, The Cardigans were in the US promoting their current album at the time, 'Long Gone Before Daylight'. So they came to KCRW studio and did this amazing acoustic live sessions, performing the singles from LGBD (with the exception of 'Communication') and also two others from 'Gran Turismo'. It was incredible. Nina's vocals were on point and sounded so cozy, moody and heartbrokenly melancholy. The acoustic arrangements were lush and impressive, taking the songs in different angles from the album versions. Every song they did is still worth checking out. So if you're a sucker for The Cardigans or the adorable indie sweetheart Nina Persson like me, wait no more and download them all. Trust me, it's worth your time.

The Pipettes - A Cover Of 'I Think We're Alone Now' And Some More Rarities!

Britpop fans or Girls Aloud fans in particular must have known that a cover of Tiffany Tommy James & The Shondels's 'I Think We're Alone Now' will be included in their greatest hits album. Now while we're waiting to see how them girls pull that off, let's check out the very own cover version of the same song by the much-loved The Pipettes, shall we?

They just made the song ctheir own, in that they turned the song comfortably into their '60s-novelty-pop style. So they did a pretty good job, nothing completely awestruck but still, lovely and well done.
I decide that one track's not enough, so I offer you two nice b-sides of 'Judy' and also an acoustic version of 'Judy'. So what you're gonna do? Download them all if you're already a fan.

I'll keep finding more excuse to post their pics, since I just discovered their Flickr page.

The Pipettes - Feminest Complaints (Judy B-Side)
The Pipettes - The Burning Ambition Of Early Diuretics (Judy B-Side)
The Pipettes - Judy (Acoustic Version) (Your Kisses Are Wasted On Me B-Side)

A little something more for the BWE readers that are coming here...Here are some more b-sides goodness of The Pipettes from a previous post.
