What perfect music for Valentine’s Day (or the day after). Dream pop doesn’t sound dreamy enough to encapsulate what sisters Piper and Skylar Kaplan have crafted with the first few singles that have been floating amongst the blogosphere under the moniker Puro Instinct. In December they released their first 7” single “Stilyagi,” which features none other than obscure freak folk protege Ariel Pink. The tune is as much of a 60s throwback as something from Pink himself, with its spaced out textures, bedroom/lo-fi style recording and ambient guitar riffs. Now they’ve put out a new tune in anticipation for their first proper,Headbangers In Ecstasy (sweet title). With “Silky Eyes” the sisters cover progressive rock, dreamy glo-fi, and disco; the way the transition from one genre to the next so coherently explains why they’ve been receiving much well deserved praise. As their label, Mexican Summer, puts it “think Fleetwood Mac, Bobb Trimble, and Lush in a champagne filled jacuzzi — but with a bit more sparkle and smog.” Sounds enticing.
